Car loan EMI calculator (Qatar)
Updated
How is the car loan EMI calculated in Qatar?
The car loan EMI (equated monthly instalment) is worked out on the reducing balance: EMI = P × r × (1 + r)n ÷ ((1 + r)n − 1), with P the amount borrowed, r the yearly rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100 and n the months. A resident buying a QAR 100,000 car with 20% down borrows QAR 80,000; over 48 months at 6.10% — the highest rate QCB allows on a loan against salary today — the EMI is QAR 1,882.47 and the interest QAR 10,359.
Official rule: Highest rate on a loan against salary: the QCB lending rate + 1.5% a year, on the reducing balance. (source, checked 2026-10-10)
A QAR 100,000 car with 20% down, QAR 80,000 borrowed over 48 months at 6.10% — the highest rate QCB allows today (QCB lending rate 4.60% + 1.5%) — costs QAR 1,882.47 a month and QAR 10,359 in interest. QCB's rule for loans against salary allows no fee besides the interest, so the real yearly rate incl. fees is 6.10%. Over the term the car costs you QAR 110,959, including the official QAR 100-a-year vehicle licence and QAR 200 for the transfer and the bank's pledge, before insurance. A non-Qatari resident may borrow at most 80% of the car's cost.
Instalments on this page follow the standard monthly formula on the reducing balance. Your bank counts interest or profit day by day between the actual payment dates and rounds each amount, so its own schedule can differ slightly. Only your signed offer is binding.

What QCB's rules say about car loans
A bank car loan repaid from your salary is a loan against salary, so the Qatar Central Bank's limits for those loans apply — conventional or Islamic (murabaha or ijara) alike.
- How much: principal and interest together at most QAR 2,000,000 for a Qatari citizen, QAR 400,000 for a non-Qatari resident — all loans against salary together.
- How long: at most 6 years for a Qatari citizen, 4 years for a resident.
- Highest rate: the QCB lending rate + 1.5% a year on the reducing balance — 6.10% with today's lending rate of 4.60% (our sum; QCB publishes the parts, not the total).
- Your salary: all monthly debt payments at most 75% of basic salary plus social allowance for a Qatari citizen, 50% of total salary for a resident. The salary is transferred to the bank.
- No fees or commissions besides the interest (QCB rule of 2011 for loans against salary).
- Residents: at most 80% of the car's cost. A non-Qatari resident must put at least 20% down; the car is pledged to the bank. For Qatari citizens we found no car-specific down-payment rule.
- Adverts must state the annual rate on the daily (reducing) balance.
QCB's limits for loans against salary come from its Instructions to Banks (consolidated edition of September 2013); QCB's list of later circulars could not be opened, so a later change is possible — your bank's offer letter is what counts.
Registration, insurance and customs
The Ministry of Interior's traffic fee table gives the official figures: QAR 100 to register a vehicle and issue the registration certificate (istimara), QAR 100 a year for a private light vehicle's licence, QAR 100 to transfer the registration to a new owner, QAR 100 to register the bank's pledge on a financed car and QAR 100 per replacement plate. The calculator prefills the licence renewal and the transfer + pledge fees with those figures. The fee for plates on a first registration, the technical inspection, insurance and customs on imported cars are not on the table — enter your own quotes; empty means not counted.

Questions people ask
How much can I borrow for a car in Qatar?
A car loan is a loan against salary: principal and interest together at most QAR 2,000,000 for a Qatari citizen and QAR 400,000 for a non-Qatari resident, and a resident may borrow at most 80% of the car's cost.
How long can a car loan in Qatar run?
At most 6 years for a Qatari citizen and 4 years for a non-Qatari resident.
Do I need a down payment as an expat?
Yes — for a non-Qatari resident the loan may not exceed 80% of the car's cost, so at least 20% must be paid up front, and the car is pledged to the bank.
What do registration and insurance cost?
In Qatar, the Ministry of Interior's fee table: QAR 100 to register a vehicle, QAR 100 a year for a private car's licence, QAR 100 to transfer it to a new owner and QAR 100 to register the bank's pledge. Plates on a first registration, the inspection and insurance have no official figure — enter your quotes.
What is the interest rate for a car loan in Qatar?
There is no single rate: each bank sets its own, but on a car loan repaid from your salary it may be at most the QCB lending rate + 1.5% a year on the reducing balance — 6.10% with today's lending rate of 4.60%, and no fee besides the interest.
How do I calculate my car loan amount?
Take the car's price and subtract your down payment. A non-Qatari resident may borrow at most 80% of the car's cost, so a QAR 100,000 car means at most QAR 80,000; and all loans against salary together may not pass QAR 400,000 (QAR 2,000,000 for a Qatari citizen), principal and interest included.
How do I calculate car loan interest?
Multiply the EMI by the number of months and subtract what you borrowed. QAR 60,000 over 36 months at 6.10% is QAR 1,828.04 a month, so QAR 65,809 in all and QAR 5,809 of interest.
