How much credit card limit can I get in Qatar?

Updated

QCB caps the limit of a credit card issued against your salary at 2 times your net total salary — your total salary minus the monthly obligations you already pay, so the cap shrinks as your instalments grow. All your card repayments also count in QCB's limit on total monthly obligations against salary: at most 50% of total salary for a non-Qatari resident, 75% of basic salary plus social allowance for a Qatari citizen. Example: a resident on QAR 20,000 a month with QAR 3,000 of monthly obligations and QAR 10,000 of existing card limits (counted at 5%, QAR 500 a month) has a net total salary of QAR 16,500; the cap is 2 × QAR 16,500 − QAR 10,000, so the rules allow at most QAR 23,000 of new card limits.

QCB's limit on monthly obligations differs: 50% of total salary for residents, 75% of basic salary plus social allowance for Qatari citizens.
QCB's total salary: your basic salary plus all bonuses and allowances regularly paid into your account at the bank.
Loan and Islamic finance instalments at any bank, standing orders such as rent, and instalments you guarantee for others (half of them while they are being paid, all of them if in default). Not your cards — they go in the next fields.
The limits, not what you owe.
Example — QCB sets no figure; ask your bank. QCB counts your card repayments among your monthly obligations but does not say how much of a limit that is. 5% is only an example.

How the limit is worked out in Qatar

Two QCB rules work together, and the lower result is your limit. First, the cap: all your card limits against salary together may be at most 2 × your net total salary. Net total salary is your total salary after deducting the regular monthly obligations you pay to your bank, other banks or anyone else — so every new instalment lowers the cap twice over. Second, the limit on total monthly obligations against salary: all your monthly repayments, card repayments included, may take at most 50% of total salary for a non-Qatari resident or 75% of basic salary plus social allowance for a Qatari citizen. In the example the cap is the lower figure; the 50% limit becomes the lower one only when your monthly obligations already come close to it. For a Qatari citizen with the same numbers and QAR 14,000 of basic salary plus social allowance, the highest new limit is QAR 23,000.

    What QCB's rules say

    • Card limit cap: the maximum credit card withdrawal limit is double the net total salary — the same for Qatari citizens and residents. QCB does not say whether that is per card or for all your cards together; this calculator counts all your cards together, the prudent reading.
    • Only cards against salary: the cap applies to cards whose source of repayment is your salary. A card backed by cash collateral or other sources of repayment is not credit against salary, and for it QCB sets no cap — the bank's own policy decides.
    • Monthly obligations: at most 50% of total salary (residents) or 75% of basic salary plus social allowance (Qatari citizens). They include loan, card and overdraft repayments at your bank, repayments to other banks (from Qatar Credit Bureau), standing orders such as rent, and instalments you guarantee for others.
    • Salary transfer: a card limit against salary is given only with your salary transferred to the bank, or against a lien on cash deposits. A card issued without it is renewed only once the salary, or cash collateral, is in place.
    • Residents: a non-Qatari resident also needs a valid visa for working in Qatar and a no-objection letter from the employer to transfer salary, dues and post-retirement benefits to the bank.
    • No minimum salary, no age: we found no QCB minimum salary, minimum or maximum age, or nationality bar for a credit card. Banks set their own conditions.
    • Interest: on cards against salary the interest or return is at most 1% a month.

A limit you don't use still counts

QCB's cap is on the limit, not on what you owe: a card you hardly use takes its full limit out of the 2 × net total salary all the same. Closing a card you don't need, or asking for a lower limit, frees room for a new card and for a loan — see how much can I borrow?. Questions people ask

How is a credit card limit calculated in Qatar?

For a card against salary, QCB caps the limit at 2 times your net total salary — your total salary minus the regular monthly obligations you already pay. All your monthly repayments, cards included, must also stay within 50% of total salary for residents or 75% of basic salary plus social allowance for Qatari citizens. The lower result is the limit.

How much credit card limit can I get on a QAR 10,000 salary?

With no other obligations or cards, at most QAR 20,000 on cards against salary: 2 × the net total salary of QAR 10,000. Every monthly obligation you already pay lowers that cap. It is the most QCB allows; your bank may offer less.

What is the minimum salary for a credit card in Qatar?

QCB sets none: we found no minimum salary or age for a credit card in its rules. A card against salary needs your salary transferred to the bank (or a lien on cash deposits).

Is the 2× limit per card or for all my cards?

QCB does not say. This calculator counts all your cards together, the prudent reading — ask your bank how it applies the cap.

What does a non-Qatari resident need for a credit card against salary?

A valid visa for working in Qatar, the salary transferred to the bank, and a no-objection letter from the employer to transfer salary, dues and post-retirement benefits to the bank.

Is there a limit on a credit card not issued against salary?

No QCB cap: a card backed by cash collateral or other sources of repayment is not credit against salary, so the 2× net total salary cap does not apply. The bank's own policy decides.
