Car finance in the UAE: interest rates, 20% rule, zero down

Updated

Car loans, zero-down deals, 0% offers and leasing in the UAE — what the rules are and what to ask before you sign.

Car loan interest rates in the UAE: flat vs real

Car loans in the UAE are usually advertised with a flat rate, charged on the full loan for the whole term. The real (reducing) rate on the same loan is close to double: over 5 years a 2.49% flat rate is about 4.72% real.

Not a valid document. Estimate for information only — not financial advice, not an offer of credit and not a bank document. Errors are possible. Only your bank's or finance company's official offer letter, contract and statements are binding.

The 20% rule

A bank car loan can cover at most 80% of the car's value, and the car loan tenure (the term) can be at most 60 months. Your instalments for all loans together may not exceed 50% of your gross salary.

"Zero down payment"

Because of the 80% cap, a zero-down deal finances the 20% another way: a second loan alongside the car loan, a price that already contains the down payment, or a lease. Each can be fine — or expensive. The zero-down calculator shows the most common one, the higher invoice price, against paying 20% down.

"0% finance"

If choosing 0% means giving up a cash discount, the discount is the interest. 0% finance or cash discount shows the real rate.

Leasing

Operating leases to individuals are not car loans under the Central Bank regulation. The 80% cap does not apply — but neither do the car-loan fee caps. Check mileage limits, end-of-term charges, early-termination costs, insurance and maintenance in the contract. For lease to own, the lease to own calculator shows the real yearly rate and the final payment.

What to ask the dealer

  • The cash price, in writing.
  • The reducing (effective) rate, not only the flat rate — that is the car loan interest rate in Dubai, or any other emirate, to compare offers on.
  • All fees: processing, insurance financed into the loan, registration.
  • For leases: mileage limit, end charges, the cost of ending early.

Questions people ask

What is the real interest rate on a UAE car loan?

In the UAE, car loans are usually quoted as a flat rate. Over 5 years the real (reducing) rate is close to double the flat rate: 2.49% flat is about 4.72% real. Compare offers on the real rate.

What is the 20% rule for car loans in the UAE?

In the UAE, a bank car loan may cover at most 80% of the car's value and run for at most 60 months, so you pay at least 20% yourself. All your instalments together may not exceed 50% of your gross salary.

How does zero down payment work if banks can only lend 80%?

In the UAE, the dealer finances the 20% another way: a second loan alongside the car loan, a price that already contains the down payment, or a lease. The most common is a higher invoice price to the bank — the zero-down calculator shows what that costs.

Do the car-loan rules apply to leasing?

No — in the UAE, operating leases to individuals are outside the Central Bank car-loan regulation: no 80% cap, no 60-month limit, but also no caps on fees. Check mileage limits, end-of-term charges and early-termination costs in the contract.

What should I ask the dealer before signing?

In the UAE, the cash price in writing, the reducing (effective) rate rather than only the flat rate, and every fee: processing, insurance financed into the loan, registration. For leases: the mileage limit, end charges and the cost of ending early.
