Zero down payment car finance (UAE): what it really costs

Updated

How do zero down payment car deals work in the UAE?

Not from a bank car loan alone: the Central Bank caps a car loan at 80% of the car's value, so on a AED 100,000 car the bank may lend at most AED 80,000. Zero-down deals cover the other AED 20,000 another way — a higher invoice price to the bank, a second loan for the 20%, or a lease — and any second loan counts in the same 50% limit on all your instalments.

Official rule: A car loan can cover at most 80% of the car's value, so you pay at least 20% yourself. (source, checked 2026-10-19)

"No down payment" usually works like this: the dealer writes a higher price on the invoice to the bank — 25% more — so that the bank's maximum of 80% covers the whole car. A AED 125,000 car at 1.99% flat over 5 years then costs AED 2,291 a month with nothing down, and AED 2,488 more in total than the same car with 20% down.

Why "zero down" exists at all

Central Bank rules let a bank lend at most 80% of a car's value, so a normal car loan needs at least 20% from you. For a zero-down deal the dealer puts a higher price on the invoice to the bank. The bank lends 80% of that higher price, which is as much as the car really costs — and you pay nothing at the start.

What it costs you: interest on the 20% you did not pay up front. That is usually small. It only becomes expensive if the bank lends more than the cash price, because then you repay money that never went into the car — check the loan amount in your contract against the cash price.

Both deals count toward the rule that all your instalments together may not exceed 50% of your salary — the zero-down instalment is higher. More in the car finance guide.

Can I get a car loan without a down payment in the UAE?

Not from a bank directly: a bank car loan may cover at most 80% of the car's value, so the 20% has to come from somewhere. In practice "no down payment" is a dealer arrangement, not a bank product. The usual form is the higher invoice price above; the alternatives are a second loan beside the car loan (often at a personal-loan rate), a lease, or a cash-back that returns your deposit after signing.

Three things to check before you sign a car loan without a down payment:

    • The loan amount. It should equal the cash price of the car, not more. Every dirham above the cash price is money you repay with interest but never received.
    • The rate type. 1.99% flat is not 1.99% a year; the calculator shows the real yearly rate next to the instalment.
    • The 50% rule. With nothing down the instalment is about a quarter higher, and all your instalments together may not exceed half your salary, so a zero-down deal can fail the bank's affordability check where a 20% deal passes.

    Questions people ask

Can I get a car loan without a down payment in the UAE?

Not as a bank product in the UAE: a bank car loan may cover at most 80% of the car's value. Zero-down deals are dealer arrangements — usually a higher invoice price to the bank, sometimes a second loan, a lease or a cash-back. Check that the loan amount equals the cash price.

Is zero down payment allowed in the UAE?

In the UAE, a bank car loan may cover at most 80% of the car's value. For a zero-down deal the dealer usually puts a higher price on the invoice to the bank, so that 80% of it covers the whole car.

Do I pay the higher invoice price?

In the UAE, not if the bank lends exactly 80% of it: that equals the cash price, and you pay interest only on that. Compare the loan amount in your contract with the cash price — it should not be higher.

Do I need a 3 month salary to get a car loan in Dubai?

In Dubai, no Central Bank rule asks for three months' salary or any minimum salary for a car loan: the rules are the 80% cap, 60 months and all instalments within 50% of your gross salary. If a bank asks for three months of salary statements or salary credits, or a dealer asks for cash up front, that is their own policy — ask what it is for and check any payment appears in the contract.
