Credit card minimum payment calculator (Bahrain)
Updated
Example: BHD 1,500 on a card at 24% a year (an example rate — CBB sets no maximum rate on credit cards, so use the one on your statement), with no new spending. CBB sets no minimum payment: each card sets its own. If your card's minimum is 5% of the amount due with "at least BHD 10" (example terms — check your statement) and you pay only that, the card takes 7 years 6 months to clear and costs BHD 896.557 in interest. Paying the first minimum, BHD 76.500, every month instead clears it in 2 years 2 months for BHD 423.303. Clearing it in 24 months takes BHD 79.307 a month. Pay the full bill by the due date and there is no interest at all.
Minimum only, year by year
Not a valid document. Estimate for information only — not financial advice, not an offer of credit and not a bank document. Errors are possible. Only your bank's or finance company's official offer letter, contract and statements are binding.
Why the minimum is a trap
The minimum is a share of what you owe. As the balance shrinks, so does the minimum, so each month you pay a little less and the debt drags on. Early on, much of each payment is interest. In the example, a 5% minimum with no "at least" amount would stretch BHD 1,500 over 33 years 5 months and cost BHD 967.739 in interest. A fixed amount every month — even just your first minimum, kept the same — clears it much faster.
What CBB's rules for credit cards say
- Paying in full or in part: No interest if you pay the full billed amount by the due date (cash withdrawals excepted). If you pay only part by the due date, interest runs only on the unpaid part, from each purchase's posting date — not on the part you paid; cash withdrawals carry interest from the day you take them.
- No interest on interest: Card interest must not be charged on unpaid interest, fees or charges, and is counted on a 365-day year.
- Abroad: Using a card abroad or in another currency: at most 3%, all inclusive.
- No rate cap and no minimum: CBB sets no maximum card rate and no minimum payment — both are in your card's terms and on your statement. The calculator uses the figures you enter.
Your card limit counts against your income
Credit cards count in the 50% check at 5% of their credit limits. With CBB's 50% limit on gross income, a BHD 2,000 limit takes BHD 100.000 a month of your room for a loan — even with nothing owed. A lower limit, or a card you close, leaves more room: see how much can I borrow?. To move a large balance into fixed instalments, compare with the personal loan calculator. How much credit limit you could still get: the credit card limit calculator.
The calculator assumes no new spending and the same rate throughout, in monthly steps; your bank counts daily on a 365-day year, so its figure can differ by a few fils.
