Zero down payment car loan in Bahrain: what it really costs
Updated
In Bahrain a car loan with nothing down is allowed — CBB sets no minimum down payment; your bank decides. Borrowing the whole BHD 8,000 at 5.00% (an example rate) over 60 months, with a BHD 100 processing fee plus 10% VAT, is BHD 150.970 a month and BHD 1,168.192 more than paying cash — BHD 105.819 more than the same car with 10% down (BHD 135.873 a month). If the zero-down offer is based on a price above the cash price — say BHD 8,800 at 3% — its APR incl. fees (CBB method) against the cash price is 7.77%, not 3%.
Instalments on this page follow the standard monthly formula on the reducing balance. Your bank counts interest or profit day by day between the actual payment dates and rounds each amount, so its own schedule can differ slightly. Only your signed offer is binding.

No down payment rule in Bahrain
The Central Bank of Bahrain's Rulebook sets no minimum down payment (and no maximum loan-to-price share) for a car loan. Whether you need to put money down is your bank's decision in its own credit review. What CBB does set for a car loan — it is consumer finance — is the term, the fees, the way interest is charged and the 50% limit on your monthly gross income.
What nothing down costs
With nothing down you pay interest (or profit) on the whole price instead of on part of it, so the instalment and the total are higher, and the instalment takes more of your 50% room. It gets expensive when the offer is based on a price above the cash price — then you pay interest on money that never went into the car. The APR (CBB's method) measured against the cash price shows both effects in one number: the yearly rate at which your payments repay what you actually receive — the car at its cash price, less the fees and VAT — compounded over the year as in CBB's APR formula, so it can be compared with the APR a bank must show.
The rules
- Term: Instalment consumer finance (personal and car loans) runs at most 7 years, restructuring included; the term may be extended at most twice.
- Fees: Processing fees on a car loan (new or used car): at most BHD 100 in total; no fee on a top-up. Bank fees carry 10% VAT — arrangement and processing fees and other bank charges such as early-termination (early-settlement) and late-payment fees; the interest (or Islamic profit) itself is VAT-exempt.
- No flat rates: Banks must not charge interest using a monthly flat rate: they must use an effective rate on the reducing balance (since October 2019).
- The APR: Adverts for instalment finance must show only the APR — the yearly rate including all fees and charges — and no other rate (no nominal, base or flat rate). Banks publish their APR on standard examples: BHD 10,000 over 7 years for consumer finance and BHD 100,000 over 25 years for housing finance.
- Your income: all consumer-finance repayments at most 50% of monthly gross income; credit cards count at 5% of their limits.
- Changes: A bank must tell you at least 30 calendar days before it raises a rate, fee or charge, so you can accept or settle the loan.
CBB's limits come from its Rulebook (Volume 1 for conventional banks, Volume 2 for Islamic banks, chapter CM-5 Consumer Finance, June 2022, and the fee caps in Appendix BC-7 / BC-8). Your bank's offer and its own credit review are what count.
