How much can I borrow in Bahrain? Loan eligibility under CBB's 50% rule
Updated
With a gross monthly income of BHD 1,000, BHD 150 a month already going to other loans and BHD 1,000 in credit-card limits (counted at 5%: BHD 50.000), up to BHD 300.000 a month is left for a new personal loan — about BHD 20,536 over 84 months at 6% (an example rate — CBB sets no maximum rate, so use the one in your offer). CBB's 50% limit on gross income is what decides: it sets no maximum loan amount. A home loan is different: CBB sets no borrowing limit for a loan on the home you live in — it is outside consumer finance, so this page does not cover it. See the home loan calculator instead.
The limits that apply
CBB's limits come from its Rulebook (Volume 1 for conventional banks, Volume 2 for Islamic banks, chapter CM-5 Consumer Finance, June 2022, and the fee caps in Appendix BC-7 / BC-8). Your bank's offer and its own credit review are what count.
Instalments on this page follow the standard monthly formula on the reducing balance. Your bank counts interest or profit day by day between the actual payment dates and rounds each amount, so its own schedule can differ slightly. Only your signed offer is binding.
Not a valid document. Estimate for information only — not financial advice, not an offer of credit and not a bank document. Errors are possible. Only your bank's or finance company's official offer letter, contract and statements are binding.
How the maximum is worked out
- Start from gross income: 50% of your monthly gross income is the most all consumer repayments together may take.
- Take off what you already repay: personal and car loans, overdrafts — and 5% of each credit-card limit.
- Turn the rest into a loan: what is left is the largest instalment; at your rate and term (at most 7 years) that instalment repays the maximum loan.
- A car: CBB sets no minimum down payment for a car loan — the limit is your income, and the loan cannot exceed the car's price.
- A home loan: CBB sets no borrowing limit for it. A loan secured by a first charge on the home you live in is outside consumer finance and outside the 50%; your bank decides with its own review. See the home loan calculator.
These are CBB's ceilings, not an offer: the bank must still review your finances and may keep you well below them. Paying a loan off early: early settlement calculator.
CBB's 50% rule in one minute
- The limit: all your monthly repayments on consumer finance — personal loans, car loans, credit cards, overdrafts — at most 50% of your monthly gross income (before deductions). Only regular income counts; a spouse's income only on a joint loan.
- Cards: each credit card counts at 5% of its limit, whether you use it or not — a BHD 2,000 limit uses BHD 100.000 of your monthly room.
- Your home loan is separate: A loan secured by a first charge on the home you live in (or will live in) is not "consumer finance": its instalment is outside the 50% consumer-finance limit. Banks must still look at housing costs in their own review.
- Above BHD 3,000 a month: For people earning more than BHD 3,000 a month the 50% limit may be relaxed after the bank's review — a higher figure is not a right.
- The same for everyone: CBB's rule makes no difference between Bahrainis and expatriates, or salaried and retired borrowers. The bank must still review your finances in detail and may keep repayments well below 50%; housing costs get particular attention, and what is left must support you and your dependants.
Questions people ask
How much of my income can go to loan repayments in Bahrain?
In Bahrain, all consumer repayments together — personal and car loans, cards and overdrafts — at most 50% of your monthly gross income (before deductions).
How do credit cards count?
In Bahrain, each card counts at 5% of its limit, whether you use it or not: a BHD 2,000 limit takes BHD 100 a month of your room.
Is there a maximum loan amount?
CBB sets none. The 50% limit and the 7-year term decide, and the bank's own review may allow less.
Can I borrow more if I earn a lot?
In Bahrain, above BHD 3,000 a month the bank may relax the 50% limit after its review. A higher figure is not a right.
Is there a CBB limit for a home loan?
No — a loan secured by a first charge on the home you live in (or will live in) is outside consumer finance, so CBB's 50% limit does not apply to it; the bank decides with its own review.
How much personal loan can I get in Bahrain?
There is no fixed maximum: the Central Bank of Bahrain limits the instalments, not the amount. All your consumer repayments may take at most 50% of monthly gross income, over at most 7 years — so on BHD 1,000 a month with no other debts, at an example rate of 6%, the ceiling is about BHD 34,227. Your bank's own policy may allow less.
