0% car finance or the cash discount? (Bahrain)

Updated

"0% for 4 years" at BHD 8,000 or BHD 500 off for cash? With BHD 800 down (our example), the 0% offer costs an APR (CBB's method) of 3.63% measured against the cash price of BHD 7,500 — not 0%. A normal car loan on the cash price at 5.00% (an example rate — CBB sets no maximum) would cost BHD 8,206.221 in all against BHD 8,000.000 for the 0% offer, so here the 0% offer is cheaper.

This page: "0% finance" or a discount for paying cash? If you give up a discount to get 0%, the discount is the interest. This shows how much. Other offers: zero down, one car loan in detail.
Ask for the cash price in writing.
CBB sets no minimum down payment — enter what the offer asks for.
Consumer finance runs at most 84 months (7 years).
Leave empty if there is none. At most BHD 100 on a car loan, plus 10% VAT, which the calculator adds.
5% is only an example — enter the rate a normal car loan would cost you (CBB sets no maximum rate).

Instalments on this page follow the standard monthly formula on the reducing balance. Your bank counts interest or profit day by day between the actual payment dates and rounds each amount, so its own schedule can differ slightly. Only your signed offer is binding.

Not a valid document. Estimate for information only — not financial advice, not an offer of credit and not a bank document. Errors are possible. Only your bank's or finance company's official offer letter, contract and statements are binding.

How the hidden rate is found

With 0% finance you repay the full offer price in equal instalments. Paying cash would have cost less. The calculator finds the APR incl. fees (CBB method): the yearly rate at which your payments repay what you actually receive — the cash price less the down payment, the fees and their VAT — compounded over the year as in CBB's APR formula, so it can be compared with the APR a bank must show. That is what the "0%" really costs. If the offer price equals the cash price and there is no fee, it really is free.

    The rules

    • Term: Instalment consumer finance (personal and car loans) runs at most 7 years, restructuring included; the term may be extended at most twice.
    • Fees: Processing fees on a car loan (new or used car): at most BHD 100 in total; no fee on a top-up. Bank fees carry 10% VAT — arrangement and processing fees and other bank charges such as early-termination (early-settlement) and late-payment fees; the interest (or Islamic profit) itself is VAT-exempt.
    • No flat rates: Banks must not charge interest using a monthly flat rate: they must use an effective rate on the reducing balance (since October 2019).
    • The APR includes all fees: Banks publish their APR on standard examples: BHD 10,000 over 7 years for consumer finance and BHD 100,000 over 25 years for housing finance. Compare a "0%" offer the same way — on the cash price, with every fee in.
    • Down payment and rate: CBB sets no minimum down payment and no maximum rate for a car loan.
    • Your income: either deal counts in CBB's limit — all consumer-finance repayments at most 50% of monthly gross income, credit cards at 5% of their limits.

CBB's limits come from its Rulebook (Volume 1 for conventional banks, Volume 2 for Islamic banks, chapter CM-5 Consumer Finance, June 2022, and the fee caps in Appendix BC-7 / BC-8). Your bank's offer and its own credit review are what count.

    Questions people ask

Is 0% car finance really free?

Only if the 0% price equals the cash price and there is no fee. If you give up a cash discount, the discount is the interest — the calculator shows it as an APR incl. fees (CBB method).

Do I need a down payment with 0% finance in Bahrain?

CBB sets no minimum down payment for a car loan; the offer or your bank decides. Enter the down payment the offer asks for.

Which is cheaper: 0% or a car loan on the cash price?

Compare the totals. The calculator puts the 0% offer next to a normal car loan on the cash price at the rate you enter — prefilled with an example rate, since CBB sets no maximum.

How long can 0% car finance run?

Like any car loan in Bahrain, at most 7 years — it is consumer finance. Processing fees at most BHD 100, plus 10% VAT.
