Updated

An OMR 8,000 car with 20% down — the least CBO allows on a vehicle loan — means OMR 6,400 borrowed. Over 60 months at 6.00%, CBO's ceiling, that is OMR 123.730 a month and OMR 1,023.796 in interest. With the highest processing fee CBO allows (OMR 25) the real yearly rate incl. fees is 6.16%. Add the official OMR 18-a-year registration renewal for a car under 1,500 cc and the OMR 5 ownership transfer, and the car costs you OMR 9,143.796 over the term, before insurance.

Monthly steps on the reducing balance, in OMR with baisa. Your bank's schedule may differ by a few baisa.

How the car loan EMI is calculated

The EMI — your monthly instalment (installment) — is worked out on the reducing balance: EMI = P × r × (1 + r)n ÷ ((1 + r)n − 1), with P the amount borrowed, r the yearly rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100 and n the number of months. An OMR 8,000 car with 20% down leaves OMR 6,400 to borrow; over 60 months at 6% that is OMR 123.730 a month and OMR 1,023.796 in interest. Islamic car finance works the same way with a profit rate instead of interest, under the same CBO ceiling.

Car loan rules in Oman: down payment, term, interest rate cap

The Central Bank of Oman's Master Circular on Personal Loans/Finance covers vehicle loans from conventional banks and Islamic banking entities alike. CBO's circular makes no distinction between Omanis and expatriates, and it sets no maximum loan amount.

    • Down payment: on a vehicle loan you pay at least 20% (CBO's minimum margin) — a bank may lend at most 80% of the price.
    • How long: a personal loan (not for housing) runs at most 10 years, and only until you are 70.
    • Highest rate: 6% a year on the interest (or profit) rate of personal loans — a fixed ceiling that CBO says may change from time to time. The rate must be the effective rate on the reducing balance; flat rates and low teaser rates are not allowed.
    • Your salary or pension: with personal loans only, all monthly debt payments at most 50% of net monthly salary; for pensioners 30% of net monthly pension (up to OMR 3,500) or 40% (above it). Every debt counts — cards, overdrafts, finance and leasing companies included.
    • Fees: processing fee at most OMR 25, none for pensioners with a net monthly pension under OMR 1,000. Paying off early costs at most 1% of the amount prepaid.
    • Insurance: a vehicle loan needs credit-life insurance (arranged by the bank or by you); the bank may not insist on comprehensive cover. The admin fee for credit-life insurance is at most 0.05% of the loan, within the limits in the rules box.

CBO's limits come from its Master Circular on Personal Loans/Finance (BM 1213, 13 February 2025); CBO says its 6% ceiling may change from time to time — your bank's offer is what counts.

Car registration and transfer fees in Oman

The Royal Oman Police publish the yearly registration renewal fee for a private vehicle under 3 tonnes by engine size: OMR 18 (under 1,500 cc), OMR 23 (1,500 to under 3,000 cc), OMR 33 (3,000 to under 4,500 cc), OMR 53 (above 4,500 cc), plus OMR 5 if a technical inspection is done. Transferring ownership costs OMR 5. The calculator prefills those official figures. There is no official insurance tariff, and we found no official figure for a first registration or plates — enter your own quotes; an empty field is not counted. Car prices are normally quoted including VAT (5%); the calculator adds none.

Importing a car to Oman: age limit, duty and VAT

Oman Customs allows a used private car to be imported if it is less than 7 years old (trucks and buses less than 10, equipment less than 15). Classic vehicles 30 years old or more are admitted under separate procedures, always with the approval of the General Traffic Department. For a personal import you must be at least 18, and the vehicle must meet the Omani standard specifications.

Oman Customs does not publish the duty as a rate on a page; it comes from Oman Customs' official duty calculator (by HS code), which we ran by hand for a petrol passenger car from outside the Gulf: 5% customs duty on the CIF value (the car's value plus shipping and insurance), no protection fee, and then VAT of 5% on the CIF value plus the duty. On a car with a CIF value of OMR 10,000 that is OMR 500 duty and OMR 525 VAT — about OMR 1,025 at the border, before registration. The calculator says its duties are as on date and for reference. For a car made in a Gulf country the public calculator offers no preference option, so this site shows no separate figure — ask Oman Customs. This car loan calculator adds no duty: for a car bought from a dealer in Oman it is normally already in the price; if you import yourself, add the duty and VAT to the price you enter.

For a personal import the importer must be at least 18; the vehicle must meet the Omani standard specifications. CBO's rules set the same limits for every borrower whose loan is against salary — they have no separate rule for Omanis and expatriates: at least 20% down, at most 10 years and the 6% ceiling. Whether a bank lends to an expatriate at all, and what it asks for, is its own policy.

How is a car loan EMI calculated?

    On the reducing balance: EMI = P × r × (1 + r)^n ÷ ((1 + r)^n − 1), with P the amount borrowed, r the yearly rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100 and n the months. An OMR 8,000 car with 20% down is OMR 6,400 borrowed; over 60 months at 6% the EMI is OMR 123.730 and the interest OMR 1,023.796.
