How much credit card limit can I get in Oman?
Updated
CBO caps a credit card against salary at 5 times your net salary — 2 times the net pension for pensioners — and sets no cap for cards not based on salary. Your Debt Burden Ratio (DBR) counts every debt, and each card against salary counts as at least 5% of its whole limit every month: with personal loans only, all payments together at most 50% of net monthly salary (30% of net pension; 40% above OMR 3,500). So the limit you can get is the lower of the two. Example: on a net salary of OMR 1,200 a month with OMR 100 of debt payments and OMR 1,000 of existing card limits, you could get about OMR 5,000 of new card limits. We found no CBO minimum income and no age limit for a card.
| Your net salary | OMR 1,200.000 a month |
| 50% of it: the most all debt payments may take (DBR) | OMR 600.000 |
| Your debt payments now | − OMR 100.000 |
| Your existing card limits (OMR 1,000) at 5% | − OMR 50.000 |
| Room left under the 50% limit | OMR 450.000 a month |
| Card limit that room allows (room ÷ 5%) | OMR 9,000 |
| 5 × net salary, minus your existing card limits | OMR 5,000 |
| Highest new card limit (the lower of the two) | OMR 5,000 |

How the credit card limit is worked out in Oman
Two of CBO's rules set the ceiling, and the lower one wins. First the cap: a credit card against salary at most 5 times your net salary (2 times the net pension for pensioners). Second the Debt Burden Ratio: your loan payments, plus at least 5% of every card limit, plus one-twelfth of any overdraft limit, must stay within 50% of net monthly salary (30% of net pension up to OMR 3,500, 40% above). A card limit of 5 times your salary takes 25% of your salary in the DBR — so the cap is normally the lower figure, unless you already repay loans that take more than 25% of your salary. CBO's limits are ceilings, not entitlements: your bank's own policy decides the limit it offers.
CBO does not say whether 5 times your net salary is the limit for each card or for all your cards together. This page uses all your cards together — the prudent reading — so your existing card limits are taken off the cap.
What CBO's rules say
- Cards against salary (CCAS): limit at most 5 times net salary, 2 times net pension for pensioners; interest/profit at most 18% a year.
- Cards not based on salary (CCNS): CBO sets no limit and no rate for them — the 5× cap and the 18% ceiling are for cards against salary.
- Every debt counts in the DBR: credit cards and overdrafts included, and borrowing from finance and leasing companies. A card against salary counts as at least 5% of its whole limit a month (a bank may use a stricter norm); an overdraft against salary at least one-twelfth of its limit.
- The DBR: with personal loans only, at most 50% of net monthly salary; pensioners at most 30% of net monthly pension up to OMR 3,500 and 40% above. This page uses that column; with a housing loan CBO's total limits are higher, but CBO does not say whether a card counts in the personal-loan part.
- No minimum income, no age limit found: we found no CBO minimum salary, minimum age, nationality or residency condition for a credit card. Banks set their own.
- Before you sign: the bank must tell you the card's credit limit and the charges when you pay less than the total amount due, and it must assess your repayment capacity — again when a product would increase your debt substantially.
- No minimum payment: the 5% is what the DBR counts, not a payment CBO requires. Your card's minimum payment is in its terms and on your statement.
A limit you don't use still counts
For a card against salary the DBR counts the limit, not the balance, so a card you hardly use still takes at least 5% of its limit out of your room every month — and a limit of OMR 10,000 takes OMR 500 a month. Closing a card you don't need, or asking for a lower limit, frees room for a loan — see how much can I borrow?. If you carry a balance, see what paying only the minimum costs on the credit card minimum payment calculator.
Questions people ask
How is a credit card limit calculated in Oman?
CBO caps a credit card against salary at 5 times your net salary (2 times the net pension for pensioners). Your Debt Burden Ratio must also fit: each card against salary counts as at least 5% of its limit a month, and with personal loans only all payments together may take at most 50% of net monthly salary. The lower of the two decides.
How much credit card limit can I get on a OMR 1,000 salary?
In Oman, with a net salary of OMR 1,000 and no other debts or cards: at most OMR 5,000 — the 5× cap. The 50% Debt Burden Ratio would allow OMR 10,000, so the cap decides. Loans you already repay can bring it lower. A pensioner with the same net pension: at most OMR 2,000.
What is the minimum salary for a credit card in Oman?
We found none in CBO's rules: no minimum income, no minimum age and no nationality condition for a credit card.
Is the 5 times salary limit per card or for all cards?
CBO does not say. This calculator uses all your cards together — the prudent reading. The Debt Burden Ratio counts every card in any case.
Is there a limit on credit cards not based on salary?
No CBO number: the 5× cap and the 18% ceiling are for credit cards against salary (CCAS). A card not based on salary (CCNS) still counts as a debt in your Debt Burden Ratio.
Does my credit card limit affect how much I can borrow?
Yes — in Oman, a card against salary counts as at least 5% of its whole limit a month in the Debt Burden Ratio, used or not — so an unused card still reduces the loan you can get.
