How much can I borrow in Kuwait? Loan eligibility calculator by salary
Updated
An employee with a net monthly salary of KWD 1,200 who already pays KWD 100 a month in instalments may pay up to KWD 380.000 a month on a new consumer loan — about KWD 19,421 over 60 months at 6.50%, the highest rate CBK allows on a conventional consumer loan. The 40% salary limit is what bites, not the 25× salary limit (KWD 30,000) or the KWD 25,000 cap. A retiree with the same net pension may use only 30%: about KWD 13,288 (KWD 260.000 a month).
The limits that apply
CBK's limits come from its instructions of 11 November 2018 on personal (consumer and housing) loans and credit cards, as amended in 2023 and 2025 — your lender's offer is what counts.
Instalments on this page follow the standard monthly formula on the reducing balance. Your bank counts interest or profit day by day between the actual payment dates and rounds each amount, so its own schedule can differ slightly. Only your signed offer is binding.
Not a valid document. Estimate for information only — not financial advice, not an offer of credit and not a bank document. Errors are possible. Only your bank's or finance company's official offer letter, contract and statements are binding.
CBK's limits in plain words
- Salary limit: all your monthly instalments at most 40% of net monthly salary for employees, 30% of the net pension for retirees. Loans, credit cards, operating leases and instalment purchases from all lenders count. Net salary is the salary certificate's figure incl. the employment-support allowance, minus deductions and the rent allowance under the housing welfare scheme; other income does not count.
- Consumer loan (personal or car): at most 25 times your net monthly salary and never more than KWD 25,000, over at most 5 years. CBK's instructions make no distinction between Kuwaitis and expatriates.
- Car loans have no separate CBK rule: a car loan is a consumer loan with the same caps. CBK sets no compulsory down payment; lenders must advise you, including on a down payment to lower the instalments.
- Housing loan (to buy, build or repair a private home): at most KWD 70,000 over at most 15 years. The rate is reset every 5 years by at most 2 points up or down.
- Consumer and housing together: at most KWD 95,000 per customer, still within the salary limit.
- All lenders together: the amount limits and the salary limit apply to everything you borrow, from every lender.
These are CBK's ceilings, not an offer: lenders add their own checks. Monthly cost of one offer: personal loan calculator. Paying a loan off early: early settlement calculator.
