Zero down payment car loan in Kuwait: what it really costs
Updated
CBK sets no compulsory down payment, so a car loan with nothing down is allowed in Kuwait — within the consumer-loan limits: at most KWD 25,000 and 25 times your net monthly salary, over at most 5 years. A KWD 9,000 car at 6.50% (the highest rate CBK allows on a conventional consumer loan) over 60 months costs KWD 176.095 a month with nothing down and KWD 1,565.720 more than paying cash (real yearly rate 6.50%) — KWD 156.572 more than the same car with 10% down. If the offer is based on a price above the cash price — say KWD 9,900 at 4% — the real yearly rate against the cash price is 7.96%.
Instalments on this page follow the standard monthly formula on the reducing balance. Your bank counts interest or profit day by day between the actual payment dates and rounds each amount, so its own schedule can differ slightly. Only your signed offer is binding.

Is zero down allowed?
Yes. CBK has no car-specific rule and sets no compulsory down payment; a car loan is a consumer loan. Lenders must advise you, including on paying money down to lower the instalments — and they still apply the consumer-loan limits to the whole amount you borrow. With nothing down, the whole price must fit inside them.
What zero down really costs
With nothing down you pay interest (or Islamic profit) on the whole price instead of on part of it, so the instalment and the total are higher. That is usually a modest cost. It becomes expensive when the offer is based on a price above the cash price — then you pay interest on money that never went into the car. The real yearly rate measured against the cash price shows both effects in one number.
The rules
- Down payment: none required by CBK.
- How much: at most 25 times your net monthly salary and never above KWD 25,000, all consumer loans together. With zero down the full car price counts.
- Term: at most 5 years.
- Highest rate: CBK discount rate + 3% (6.50% today), fixed, for conventional loans; CBK's Islamic instructions set the same limits but no profit-rate cap. Only CBK-approved fees.
- Your salary: all monthly instalments at most 40% of net monthly salary (employee) or 30% of the net pension (retiree) — the zero-down instalment is the higher one.
CBK's limits come from its instructions of 11 November 2018 on personal (consumer and housing) loans and credit cards, as amended in 2023 and 2025 — your lender's offer is what counts.

Questions people ask
Can I get a car loan with no down payment in Kuwait?

Is the rule different for expatriates?
CBK's instructions make no distinction between Kuwaitis and expatriates; only being an employee or a retiree changes the salary limit.
Why does zero down cost more?
In Kuwait, you pay interest (or Islamic profit) on the whole price instead of on part of it. If the offer is based on a price above the cash price, you also pay interest on money that never went into the car.
How do I compare offers?
By the real yearly rate measured against the cash price, in Kuwait. Ask for the cash price and the yearly rate in writing.
